With You Forever is an instant classic for any parent looking for a way to represent a deceased Loved One to a child. Many children will never know a beloved grandparent, Aunt, Uncle, Cousin or sadly, a Parent who has passed away. With You Forever provides an attention grabbing, creative and age-appropriate means for a parent to introduce a deceased loved one's presence into a child's life.
In Rozman's case, the voice of her dearly departed mother and grandmother to her son is being represented. Rozman veers away from the clichéd and trite use of barn animals and instead uses a refreshingly eclectic array of animals who reveal the "secrets" that "grandma" would have wanted to convey. The colorful and bold illustrations are beautifully exceptional as they accompany the endearing characters introduced by Rozman like Suzie the Conch. Suzie is the voice of "grandma's first secret" to the reader and represents the basic concept that a person is beautiful "inside and out." More complex concepts are also present. "Inman the Trout" finds himself woefully stuck out of the water whereby the message of "Have a Plan" is revealed as one of "grandma's" important secrets. Parents can easily replace "grandma's" life lessons with the name of the Loved One not able to be present in the child's life, i.e. "Daddy" "Aunt Janet" "Cousin Sam", etc.
I read the book to my 3-year-old daughter in the voice of my dearly departed friend whom we referred to as "Aunt Jen." When my daughter saw an Otter at the park weeks later, she asked if the otter was "like the otter in Aunt Jen's book who had the family." The connection was made!
